Many of the planet's moons were named for other mythological figures related to Neptune and the sea. For example, the Nereids were sea nymphs who frolicked in the oceans. Galatea was one of the sea nymphs. Naiads were the goddesses, or nymphs, of water. They lived in lakes, streams, and fountains. Triton was the son of Neptune. He had a human body above the waist and the tail of a fish. Triton made the ocean roar by blowing through a seashell. Proteus was another son of Neptune. He could change his shape at will. He was the herdsman for Neptune's horses, which carried Neptune over the seas.
